MARÍA BERRÍO

Maria Berrio is a Colombian-born, Brooklyn-based artist known for her large-scale, multi-layered collages that draw on her personal history and cultural heritage. Berrio was born in Bogotá, Colombia in 1982 and grew up in the United States, studying art at the Parsons School of Design in New York City.

Berrio’s work explores themes of identity, memory, and cultural hybridity. She draws on the traditional craft techniques of Colombia, such as weaving, embroidery, and paper-cutting, as well as elements of Western art history and popular culture. Her work often features images of women and animals, often depicted in surreal and dreamlike landscapes.

Berrio has exhibited her work in solo and group shows throughout the United States and internationally, including at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami. Her work is held in the collections of several prominent institutions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Perez Art Museum Miami, and the North Carolina Museum of Art.

Throughout her career, Berrio has received numerous awards and grants, including a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant in 2015 and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2017.
