Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004) was an American artist associated with the Pop Art movement. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Wesselmann studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and later at New York's Cooper Union. He began his career as a cartoonist, but turned to painting in the early 1960s.
Wesselmann's early works featured collages of found objects, but he is best known for his bold, colorful paintings of nudes, still lifes, and landscapes. His works often featured flat, simplified shapes and were characterized by a sense of humor and a fascination with everyday objects.
Wesselmann's work was exhibited widely during his lifetime, including shows at the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. He continued to work up until his death in 2004, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneer of Pop Art and an important figure in American art.
