Miriam Cahn is a Swiss artist known for her politically charged paintings, drawings, and installations. Born 1949 in Basel, Switzerland, she studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Basel before moving to Geneva to attend the École des Beaux-Arts. Cahn's work often explores themes of violence, sexuality, and gender, as well as the relationship between the individual and society. She frequently uses her own body as a subject, and her work often includs depictions of animals and hybrid creatures.
Cahn's work is exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale, Documenta in Kassel, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout her career, including the Meret Oppenheim Prize in 1997, the Prix Culturel Manor in 2001, and the Swiss Grand Prix in 2016.
