Sean Scully is an Irish-born artist known for his abstract paintings, drawings, and prints that explore the interplay of color, form, and texture. He was born on June 30, 1945, in Dublin, Ireland, and grew up in South London. Scully began his artistic training at Croydon College of Art and Newcastle University before studying at Harvard University on a Harkness Fellowship.
Scully's early work was heavily influenced by Minimalism and Color Field painting, but he gradually developed his own distinctive style, characterized by grids, stripes, and blocks of color. He often works in a large format and uses thick layers of paint or other materials to create richly textured surfaces.
Over the course of his career, Scully has exhibited widely and his work is held in numerous public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Tate in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He has received many honors and awards, including being elected a Royal Academician by the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 2013.
